Can You Apply for a Minnesota Real Estate License Online?  

No, you can’t apply online. You will need to obtain a sponsoring broker and then as your licensed primary broker they can submit an application for licensure. Only a licensed primary broker can submit a license application for you. The license fee is $130. 

How Much Does It Cost to Get a Real Estate License in Minnesota? 

Becoming a real estate agent in Minnesota requires time and money but is very rewarding. An aspiring agent will spend up to $770.

Real Estate License Reciprocity 

Yes, Minnesota offers full reciprocity for active real estate license holders and residents of certain states. 
 
They include:

  • Wisconsin (partial reciprocity) 

 

Out-of-state residents are required to:  

  • You must submit a license application on www.pulseportal.com and pay the license fee of $210. 
  • Email a Letter of Certification (no more than 90 days old) documenting that you are currently licensed as a broker and reside in Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, or Wisconsin to [email protected] with “Real Estate Application” in the subject line. 
  • If you’re a resident of Wisconsin, you must complete the 13-hour Wisconsin to Minnesota Reciprocal pre-license course and the course must be completed in not more than a year prior to application for licensure.

 

Note: Residents of Wisconsin must also pass the state portion of the broker exam. 

How Do I Apply for The Minnesota Real Estate Licensing Exam? 

Minnesota partners with Pearson VUE to administer the broker licensing examination. You can visit Pearson VUE website to find a testing center near you and to make an online exam reservation. How Do I Submit My Fingerprints for The Background Check?

You will need to submit your fingerprints for the background check if you do not hold a current license, including a temporary license, issued by the Minnesota Board of Social Work. 

Once you submit your application and pay both the CBC and the applicable application fee to the Board, you will receive a fingerprinting packet via email from the CBC Program Office.  The CBC Program Office is responsible for processing CBCs for all the health-related licensing boards. 

The email from the CBC Program Office contains detailed instructions about how to be fingerprinted, how to submit your fingerprints to the CBC Program Office and will include all required forms for the fingerprint-based CBC.  Do not schedule fingerprinting until you have received this email from the CBC Program Office

When the CBC Program Office receives your fingerprints and required forms, the CBC Program Office will submit the information to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) for processing.  The BCA will return the results to the CBC Program Office.  The CBC Program Office will send the results to the Board for review. 

How Do I Take the Minnesota Real Estate Licensing Exam?

The Minnesota real estate licensing exam is administered by Pearson VUE and it consists of 130 questions.  

  • State portion 50 questions
  • General portion 80 questions 

 

Both the general and state sections of the Minnesota licensing exam must be passed with a score of at least 75%. Immediately upon exam completion, candidates will receive a score report marked as “pass” or “fail”. Those who pass one part of the examination and fail the other, need to retake only the failed portion of the exam. 

You will need to take some items with you to the testing center. 

They include: 

  • Two forms of valid, current signature identification, one of which must be photo-bearing (preferably a driver’s license) 
  • Original course completion certificate.
  • Simple calculator 

 

Note: You must apply for your broker license within 1 year of passing the examination. Otherwise, you will need to retake the examination and pass it again. 

How Do I Submit My Minnesota Real Estate Application?

You must be associated with an actively licensed real estate broker before you can become a licensed real estate salesperson. You must be licensed to act on behalf of a licensed broker. You do not submit your application for a real estate salesperson license; the real estate broker that you become associated with must submit it by logging in to Pearson VUE’s Credentials Management System for Certification and Licensing Programs using the username and password of the licensed real estate company that the individual will be associated with.

Minnesota Real Estate License Renewal 

Minnesota real estate licenses are good for two years. Renewal fees will run you $70.  

Does Minnesota Require Post-Licensing Education?  

Minnesota real estate agents who are renewing their licenses or filing for a late renewal must complete 30 hours of approved continuing education coursework. 

  • 1 hour of training to specify in Agency Representation and disclosure. 
  • 1 hour of training in state and federal fair housing laws, regulations and rules, other antidiscrimination laws. 
  • Must obtain 3.75 or 7.5 hours of module training every license year per designated course by the state.

Step 5: Register and pass the licensing exam by earning a score of 75% or higher.

  • A license history certification or letter of good standing from every state in which you are licensed as a real estate agent. 
  • You must register for the reciprocity broker exam through PSI. 
  • You must pay the appropriate fees with a credit/debit card or ACH (electronic check). 

How Do I Apply for The Kentucky Broker Licensing Exam? 

Kentucky Real Estate Commission partners with PSI to conduct the state licensing exam. Before you can schedule and exam, you must have completed the required pre-licensing hours of education and completed an FBI criminal background check. Review, form 207 and allow 7-10 days for processing. Do not register for the examination unless you have verified with the KREC that you have completed all the required hours.

Note: Fees paid to the KREC do not include the exam fee. The exam fee must be paid separately to PSI. 

How Do I Submit My Fingerprints for The Background Check?

As an applicant for your real estate license, you are required to submit fingerprints and complete a background check. For Kentucky residents, state and federal criminal background check reports must be obtained through IdentoGO© through the live scan process. Appointments are available by scheduling online or by calling 1-844-543-9714. 
 
For non-Kentucky residents, applicants can send a hard card (FBI FD-258 applicant fingerprint card) to the IDEMIA card scan conversion facility.

How Do I Take the Kentucky Broker Licensing Exam?

Applicants must complete a criminal background check and complete the pre-licensing education hours before they can take the licensing exam. Both the National portion and state section of the Kentucky Licensing Exam must be passed with a score of 75% or higher.  
 
There are 2 parts of Real Estate Broker Exam in Kentucky: 

  • National exam (out of 80 questions – 60 must be answered correctly).  
  • State exam (out of 40 questions – 30 must be answered correctly). 

 

You are given 4 hours to complete the national and state specific parts part of the exam in Kentucky. You will need to take 2 forms of ID and a calculator with you. 
 
If you successfully pass the exam, you will receive your license application at the PSI testing center. If you do not pass the first time (either or both the National and state portion), you are permitted to retake the exam twice, but you must retake the failed portion(s) within 4 months. Note: The state requires proctoring of your licensing exam. 

How Do I Submit My Kentucky Broker Application?

You must submit your license application to the Kentucky Real Estate Commission within 60 days of passing your real estate exam.  If you fail to meet this deadline, you will need to retake the examination and begin the process again. You can apply for license by following one of the following: 

  • Mail submission: You will receive a paper application at the testing site upon passing both portions of the exam. Complete the application and send it to the Commission’s office with a check or money order for the appropriate payment.  
  • Online submission: You will receive an email from ppc.mailto:[email protected] within 36- 48 hours of passing both portions of the exam. Read the email carefully. Click on the link and follow the prompts. At the end of the application, you will be asked to pay the appropriate fees with a credit/debit card or ACH (electronic check). 

 

You will also need to attach some documents alongside your application. 

They include: 

  • Proof of high school diploma or its equivalent (GED) 
  • Official college transcript or course completion certificate 
  • Proof of completing the background check 
  • Proof of obtaining an Error and Omission Insurance. 

 

KREC will review your application and decide. Once your application is approved, you can practice as a licensed Kentucky Broker. 

Note: If you are applying as a principal broker, please note you must have a definite place of business (not a P.O. box) in Kentucky as well as an escrow account at a bank located in Kentucky. 

Kentucky Broker License Renewal 

Kentucky broker licenses are good for 1 year. Renewal fees will run you $60 annually.  

Does Kentucky Require Post-Licensing Education?

How Do I Submit My Fingerprints for The Background Check?

As an applicant for your real estate license, you are required to submit fingerprints and complete a background check. For Kentucky residents, state and federal criminal background check reports must be obtained through IdentoGO© through the live scan process. For non-Kentucky residents, applicants can send a hard card (FBI FD-258 applicant fingerprint card) to the IDEMIA card scan conversion facility.

How Do I Take the Kentucky Real Estate Licensing Exam?

Applicants must complete a criminal background check and complete the pre-licensing education hours before they can take the licensing exam. Both the National portion and state section of the Kentucky Licensing Exam must be passed with a score of 75% or higher. The national section is allocated 150 minutes to answer 80 questions while the state portion is allocated 90 minutes to answer 50 questions. 
 
If you successfully pass the exam, you will receive your license application at the PSI testing center. How Do I Apply for The Illinois Broker Licensing Exam? 

After completing the required pre-license course, you have up to two years to apply for your exam. Illinois partners with PSI to conduct the state licensing examinations. Applicants must register with PSI as a student prior to course completion and you can do this by creating an account with PSI
 
You can schedule your exam directly by visiting PSI or you can call 855-340-3894. You can also schedule your exam through a fax or mail registration form found in the PSI Illinois Candidate Handbook
 
When going to the test center for your exam, you must take along with you two forms of identification, with one being government issued with your current name, signature, and photograph. 
 
The broker examination must be passed within 4 years of the end date of the appropriate pre-license course. If you miss the deadline, you must retake the course. Your school will need to electronically submit verification of course completion to PSI otherwise you will not be able to schedule the state exam.

How Do I Submit My Fingerprints for The Background Check?

Applicants are required to submit their fingerprints so a criminal background check through a fingerprint vendor licensed by the Department can be conducted. Fingerprints must be taken within 60 days from the date that the application is submitted to the Department or the Department’s testing vendor. It takes about two- three days for your fingerprints to be reported to the IDFPR, so make sure to schedule your appointment through Accurate Biometrics at one of the fingerprinting vendor locations at least two days prior to the exam.

How Do I Take the Illinois Broker Licensing Exam?

The Illinois Real Estate Broker Exam is divided into two parts: 

  • Part 1: National Exam 
  • Part 2: State Exam

 

Broker licensing exams in Illinois are administered by PSI exams at www.psiexams.com but before registering, your school will need to electronically submit verification of course completion to PSI otherwise you will not be able to schedule the state exam. After taking the exams, you will report to the test supervisor immediately for your test result. Applicants must pass both the national and state portion of the exam. However, if you fail one, you are required to retake only the failed portion. You have 12 months from the date of passing the other portion to retake and pass the order portion. 
 
You will also be asked series of candidate screening questions following your exam. Depending on your answers, you may need to provide additional documentation with your license. 

How Do I Submit My Illinois Broker Application?

Prior to submitting your broker application, you will need to obtain sponsorship from a managing broker. You can submit your license application to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) alongside some required documents.

  • Any court documentation and sworn statements regarding any positive responses on the applicant screening form (if applicable).
  • Original certification of license held in any other Jurisdiction.
  • Information about your managing broker.
  • Your official score report from PSI.

Connecticut Partners with PSI to conduct the licensing examination. PSI recommends scheduling your exams online as it is fast and easy. Visit www.psiexams.com to register. After your application is processed and approved, you will receive an examination eligibility post card with scheduling instruction.

How Do I Submit My Fingerprints for The Background Check?

There are no specific instructions on how to submit fingerprints for a background check at Connecticut. However, you must make sure you have a clean criminal history and you have not been found guilty of offences such as forgery, embezzlement, obtaining money under false pretenses, larceny, extortion, conspiracy to defraud, or other similar offenses otherwise, your real estate license could be suspended or revoked, and the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection could impose a fine of up to $2,000. 
 
Note: You are required to complete the Criminal Conviction Review Worksheet and document any crime you might have been found guilty of. 

How Do I Take the Connecticut Broker Licensing Exam?

How Do I Submit My Connecticut Broker Application?

After successful completion of the licensing exam, you can submit your Broker Application at PSI. Take note of the following before submitting your application to PSI

  • You may take the examination on an unlimited basis for up to one year from the date of eligibility. 
  • You must pass both portions of the examination within one (1) year of eligibility. 
  • If you do not pass both portions within one year, you must reapply with the PSI. 
  • After you pass both portions of the examination, within the one year of eligibility, you have 2 years from the date of the most recently passed portion to activate your license. 
  • All real estate broker licenses expire annually on March 31st. All new licenses activated January 1st – March 31st will be given an expiration date of March 31st of the next year.
